Protection levels in military vehicles: how to read STANAG 4569

Specifications for military vehicles often say “protection level according to STANAG 4569”. For a seat manufacturer this is an important hint, because the seat is part of the crew protection system, not a separate accessory.

What STANAG 4569 is

It is a NATO standard describing protection levels for the crews of logistic and light armoured vehicles. It defines resistance to bullets, artillery fragments, and mines and improvised explosive devices. Each threat has its own scale of levels, and a higher number means higher resistance.

What it means for the seat

  • The vehicle is certified, not the seat alone. The seat must still work with the vehicle structure and must not reduce its performance.
  • Mine threats need different solutions than ballistic fire. In a blast, the mounting method and energy absorption matter.
  • Mounting and harnesses. Attachment points and belts must withstand the loads defined for the given level.

How to question a supplier

Ask for which protection level the seat was designed or tested, in which vehicle and by which method. Request the test report, not only a declaration.
